The National Assembly’s Health, Social Care and Sport Committee will be scrutinising the actions of Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board in light of concerns around the quality of its maternity services.
Maternity services at the health board have been taken in to special measures after failings were identified which may have contributed to the death of a number of babies in recent years.
Other serious incidents have also been identified.
The Committee will be questioning representatives of Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB about the failings, the standard of maternity services and what is being done to improve them.
“The recent reports concerning Cwm Taf Health Board are incredibly distressing,” said Dai Lloyd AM, Chair of the Health, Social Care and Sport Committee.
“Families have been left devastated by the deaths of new-borns while many others are left coping with the consequences of a health board and services under extreme pressure.
“We want to know what went wrong, what is being done to support those affected and how senior management at Cwm Taf Morgannwg Health Board are making sure it doesn’t happen again.”
The committee will hold its evidence session with Cwm Taf Morgannwg Health Board on Thursday, 23 May as part of its wider programme of general scrutiny sessions with all health boards in Wales over the coming months.
