Pierhead building hosts Commonwealth War Graves Commission exhibition

The National Assembly’s Pierhead building is hosting Remembered, a major photographic exhibition celebrating 90th anniversary of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) The exhibition opened on September 17th and will run until November 4th in the main hall at the Pierhead building. The display comprises some 40 compelling new images from all over the globe by award-winning photographer Brian Harris – capturing the power, beauty and tranquility of the cemeteries and memorials where 1.7 million Commonwealth servicemen and women are commemorated and the extraordinary and diligent efforts of those who believed the war dead should not be forgotten. The Commission cares for some 9,000 war graves in Wales and relies heavily on the support of the public and local authorities in caring for graves all over the country. The Assembly’s Presiding Officer Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas said: “The Pierhead building is a landmark and was the first sight that many sailors returning to Cardiff from war campaigns would see as they approached the docks. The Merchant Navy memorial outside the building and the memorial in the foyer of the building to staff of the Cardiff Dock and Railway Company who lost their lives during the two world wars are testament to the commitment the people of Wales made to the war efforts, so it is very fitting that the exhibition is being held here.” The Pierhead building is open to the public from 9.30am - 4.30pm on weekdays and 10.30am – 4.30pm at weekends. Entry to the exhibition is free. For further information on the exhibition please contact Peter Francis on 01628 507163, peter.francis@cwgc.org or Emily Bird on 01628 507171, emily.bird@cwgc.org.
