Statement from the Chair of the National Assembly’s Audit Committee on the Wales Audit Office report on Maternity Services

While it is good news that many women are satisfied with the maternity care provided, the Wales Audit Office report on Maternity Care in Wales also highlights unacceptable inconsistencies in maternity services across Wales.

Welsh Ministers have not yet articulated an overall strategy for maternity care in Wales and until that is done, these unacceptable inconsistencies will continue. The Auditor General’s report has revealed that the planning of maternity services is being undermined by the lack of such a strategy and by the lack of good information about the cost and quality of services.

There are valuable lessons to be learned from this report and NHS organisations now need to work together to implement the report’s recommendations.

The Wales Audit Report is published on Friday 19 June.
