The following is a proposal for a Member Bill tabled during the Sixth Senedd:

Proposing Member:

Paul Davies MS

Title of the proposed Bill:

Protection of War Memorials (Wales) Bill

Policy Objectives of the proposed Bill:

The aim of the Bill is to:

  1. Ensure that local authorities undertake a nation-wide, up-to-date inventory of War Memorials in Wales, so that we have recorded data that details the number and locations of all war memorials in Wales.
  2. Place local authorities under a statutory duty to ensure maintenance of war memorials in their areas. This would involve ensuring each memorial had a custodian who had responsibility for maintaining the memorial. The custodian (or War Memorial Officer) would:
    • establish a point of contact for the public,
    • develop partnerships with local community groups and organisations who have already established responsibility for some memorials in the area, and
    • forge links with local schools to educate children and young people about the importance of war memorials and to tell the stories of the great sacrifices made for us.
