Biography

Key interests and achievements

James is committed to achieving the best possible outcomes for communities across Brycheiniog Tawe Nedd. His key interests include supporting local businesses, improving access to high-quality healthcare and public services, championing agriculture and rural communities, and securing fair investment for all parts of the constituency. Having grown up on a family farm, James has a particular interest in agriculture, the environment and the future of rural Wales. In June 2026, he was elected Chair of the Senedd’s Climate Change, Environment, Sustainability and Rural Affairs Committee. James has a longstanding interest in rugby and is proud to have captained Gwernyfed Rugby Club’s second team. He also enjoys keeping fit and walking in the countryside with his spaniel Bonnie.

Personal history

James was born and raised in the Brecon and Radnorshire area, now part of the Brycheiniog Tawe Nedd constituency. Growing up on the family farm gave him a lifelong passion for the outdoors, agriculture and the important contribution farming makes to the economy, environment and communities of Wales. During his teenage years, James was actively involved in Young Farmers. This took him throughout the area, helping him to build lasting friendships, develop practical skills and gain a strong understanding of rural communities. James did not follow a traditional route into politics. Rather than attending university, he developed his skills and experience through employment and public service. He remains committed to representing the communities of Brycheiniog Tawe Nedd and helping people from all backgrounds fulfil their potential.

Political history

In 2017, James was elected as the County Councillor for the Gwernyfed ward and subsequently served as a Cabinet Member on Powys County Council. In May 2021, he was elected to the Senedd as the Member for Brecon and Radnorshire. He was re-elected to the Senedd in May 2026 as a Member representing the newly established constituency of Brycheiniog Tawe Nedd. In June 2026, James was elected Chair of the Senedd’s Climate Change, Environment, Sustainability and Rural Affairs Committee.
