Biography

Key Interests and achievements

Elyn’s political interests include tackling child poverty, supporting culture, and expanding access to skills and adult learning. She is particularly passionate about ensuring that everyone has the support, resources and opportunities they need to thrive, especially disabled people in education and the workplace. As a newly elected councillor in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Elyn initiated a scheme to provide free period products in schools. The scheme was supported by the Welsh Government as a pilot and later rolled out across Wales. She is proud of having helped turn a practical local idea into a national policy that supports dignity, equality and wellbeing for young people. Elyn’s work is shaped by a belief in fairness, inclusion and the importance of removing barriers that prevent people from reaching their potential.

Personal history

Elyn is from Treherbert in the Rhondda Fawr, where she continues to live. Her roots in the Rhondda have strongly shaped her values and her commitment to representing communities with pride, honesty and determination. Growing up, Elyn was a young carer for her mother, alongside her sisters. This experience gave her an early understanding of responsibility, family, and the importance of support being available when people need it most. Elyn’s parents were passionate supporters of the Welsh language and chose to send her to Welsh-medium education, an opportunity that had been denied to them. That experience gave Elyn a deep appreciation of the importance of access to Welsh-medium education and the need to ensure that opportunity is available to every generation. Elyn is a deaf woman and has extensive personal experience of navigating a world that was not built with her needs in mind. Unfortunately, as a child, Elyn was not given the opportunity to learn to sign. This has shaped her commitment to ensuring that disabled people are given the support, adjustments and resources they need to flourish, particularly in education and employment. Outside politics, Elyn performs with Selsig Musical Theatre Society and Côr Godre’r Garth. She is an avid reader of historical fiction and a proud member of Y Wal Goch. Elyn graduated from Aberystwyth University with a BA in Welsh and International Politics. She has Diploma of Higher Education in Music and, before being elected to the Senedd, was studying for an MBA with The Open University.

Professional background

Before being elected to the Senedd, Elyn built up wide-ranging experience across public service, education and politics. She worked as a caseworker and later Office Manager for Jill Evans MEP, supporting constituents and gaining valuable experience of representation, advocacy and public policy at a European level. Elyn later worked as a DWP Work Coach, supporting people to navigate employment and welfare systems. She also worked as Office Manager to Heledd Fychan MS and as a Tuition Senior Assistant for the Open University. Across these roles, Elyn developed experience in casework, communication, problem-solving and supporting people through complex systems. She brings to her work a modest, hardworking approach, grounded in practical experience and a strong commitment to public service.

Political history

Elyn had long been interested in current affairs, but her understanding of Welsh politics deepened during the 2011 referendum campaign on further powers for Wales. While studying at Aberystwyth University, she attended a hustings and was struck by the strength of the case for Wales having greater powers over its own future. That experience moved her from being a passive observer to becoming actively involved. She began putting up campaign posters around university halls and later joined Plaid Cymru during the 2012 leadership campaign, voting in that election. Elyn was elected as a Plaid Cymru councillor for the Ystrad ward in Rhondda Cynon Taf, serving from 2017 to 2022. During that time, she worked on local issues and community campaigns, including chairing the Gelli Flood Action Group, lead a successful campaign to stop the sale of green land in the ward, initiating a local food scheme to connect and promote local suppliers across RCT, and initiating the free period products scheme in schools. As a Plaid Cymru representative for Afan Ogwr Rhondda, Elyn is committed to standing up for her communities, strengthening Welsh democracy, and working for a fairer, more inclusive Wales.

Other

Elyn’s life and work are shaped by community, culture and inclusion. Her involvement in musical theatre and choral singing reflects her belief in the importance of the arts and culture in bringing people together, building confidence and strengthening local identity. Her own experience as a deaf woman has also given her a deep understanding of the barriers disabled people can face in everyday life. Elyn is determined to use that experience constructively, advocating for better support, greater accessibility and systems that are designed around people’s needs. For Elyn, politics is about making practical changes that improve people’s lives, while ensuring that communities across Afan Ogwr Rhondda have a strong voice in Wales’s future.
