Key Interests and achievements
Matthew Jones was elected to represent Sir Fynwy Torfaen in
the Senedd in May 2026. His policy interests focus on reducing inequalities in
Wales, including in cancer diagnosis and care, tackling discrimination, and
addressing wider societal inequalities such as poverty.
Personal history
Matthew was born in 1988 and raised in Pontypool, and now
lives in Cwmbran. He attended Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw before studying at
Aberystwyth University, where he completed a BA in Drama and a PhD focusing on
Theatre for Young People in Wales. His interest in reducing cancer inequalities
stems, in part, from losing his mother to cancer when he was a child.
Professional background
While undertaking his PhD, he worked as a tutor at
Aberystwyth University and as a warden in Neuadd Pantycelyn. He then went on to
work in the Senedd, including as an assistant to Dafydd Elis-Thomas and later
as Senior Advisor to Elin Jones MS. Before his election, he was Policy and
Public Affairs Lead for Wales at Breast Cancer Now, where he led a campaign to
increase breast screening uptake across Wales.
