Key Interests and achievements
Outside politics, Nigel is a keen sportsman who believes in
the importance of staying active. Although he now plays walking football rather
than the traditional game, he remains a passionate football enthusiast. He is
also a keen golfer and cyclist, enjoying the opportunities both provide to keep
fit and spend time outdoors. A lifelong motorcyclist, Nigel still enjoys
getting out on ride-outs whenever his schedule allows. In 2025, he took part in
the celebrated Dave Day charity ride from London to the Lake District, held in
memory of broadcaster and motorcycle enthusiast Dave Myers. Nigel is also an
animal lover and, until recently, has always had Bernese Mountain Dogs at his
side. His love of animals extends beyond dogs; through many years spent with
his late daughter's family on their farm in France, he has developed a deep
affection for horses and farm animals. He continues to visit what he fondly
refers to as the "French side of his family."
Personal history
Following the heartbreaking loss of his daughter almost two
years ago, Nigel has channelled his grief into positive action, taking part in
a number of charity walks and fundraising events in support of cancer causes.
These experiences have strengthened his commitment to supporting families
facing similar challenges and to making a positive difference in the lives of
others.
Professional background
Prior to his election, Nigel built a varied career in public
service, working as a schoolteacher, serving with the police, and working
within the National Health Service.
Nigel also spent a period as a professional wedding photographer and of
late has become a published author.
