All new homes to be fitted with fire sprinklers after AMs back new law
17 February 2011
Assembly Members today (16 February) voted in favour of a new law that compels house builders to fit automatic sprinklers into new homes built in Wales.
The Domestic Fire Safety (Wales) Measure was introduced by Vale of Clwyd AM Ann Jones after she won the Members ballot to bring forward legislation.
“This is a law that will save lives,” said Mrs Jones.
“Fire safety in homes has improved over the years but we cannot ignore the fact that 80 per cent of deaths and injuries from fire in Wales still occur in the home.
“I believe, and the evidence backs this up, that sprinkler systems in homes will make a difference in this area.”
The measure will go before Privy Council on April 7 for final approval.
