On 16 May the Senedd voted to create a Wales Covid-19 Inquiry Special Purpose Committee.
Today, the Committee met for the first time.
The Co-Chairs of the Committee, Tom Giffard MS and Joyce Watson MS said:
“Today we met for the first time as a Committee and we’re in agreement that, on behalf of the people of Wales, we will carry out a comprehensive inquiry aimed at covering any gaps in the work of the UK Covid-19 Inquiry.
“Our responsibilities have been given to us by the whole of the Senedd and we will follow its wishes, and as well as covering areas not looked at by the UK inquiry we will expand on issues specific to Wales.
“Throughout the summer we will be closely tracking the work of the UK public inquiry and gathering expert advice and support which will inform our work for the months to come.
“We will reconvene in September to develop a timetable for our work, which will be closely tied to the scope of the UK inquiry.
“We have a serious job to do, and those who we lost, and their families, are at the heart of all we are doing. We will make sure that we involve the public and experts along the way as we examine the role of the Welsh Government and other public bodies during the pandemic.”
