The National Assembly for Wales

1. Notes that:

a) the number of babies needing care in neonatal units is increasing;

b) there is a worrying shortage of nursing and medical staff to care for these babies;

c) there is no system for coordinating the care and transport of babies around neonatal units in Wales;

2. Calls on the Welsh Assembly Government to:

a) commit to a long-term recruitment strategy to ensure that there are adequate numbers of neonatal nurses, midwives and neonatal consultants to meet the needs of the Welsh population;

b) deliver a dedicated neonatal transport system that can move babies and their families when necessary.
