Item 6: Welsh Conservatives Debate
NDM4120 William Graham (South Wales East)
The National Assembly for Wales:
1. Recognises the valuable role Welsh agriculture has to play in battling the economic downturn;
2. Regrets that the introduction of compulsory electronic identification for sheep will have a devastating impact on the Welsh sheep industry;
3. Notes that the current system of sheep tagging provides full and robust traceability;
4. Regrets the considerable technical shortcomings and disproportionate costs of current systems of identification;
5. Calls on the Welsh Assembly Government to postpone the introduction of compulsory electronic identification until it is cost-effective and 100% reliable under field conditions.
