To ask the Minister for Economy and Transport

Angela Burns (Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire): What recent discussions has the Minister held with the UK Government concerning the impact of Budget 2009 on Welsh business? (WAQ54473)

Answer issued on 23 September 2009

I have regular discussions with a wide range of UK Government Ministers. I regularly meet the Secretary of State for Wales who represents Wales on the National Economic Council, he also co-chairs the Economic Summits.

I attend the Joint Ministerial Committee with UK Government Ministers and officials are also closely involved through the JMC Officials’ Group. I have also had meetings with Lord Adonis and discussed cross-border transport issues, including high-speed rail, electrification of the Great Western Main Line and cross-border road schemes. I have discussed issues around the Digital Britain report with the Minister for Communications, Technology and Broadcasting.

Matters relating specifically to the UK Budget are discussed between the Minister for Finance and Service Delivery and the Chief Secretary to the Treasury. I will continue to ensure that Welsh interests are covered in all aspects of planning of UK Government led projects, such as high speed rail and electrification.
