To ask the Minister for Natural Resources

Kirsty Williams (Brecon and Radnorshire): Are environmental impact assessments required within planning applications for pig units and, if so, for what size of unit? (WAQ68117)

Answer received on 15 December 2014

The Minister for Natural Resources (Carl Sargeant):  Where planning permission is required for new pig units, environmental impact assessment (EIA) is automatically required for installations with more than 3,000 places for production pigs (over 30kg), or 900 places for sows. Otherwise the need for EIA will depend on whether the development is likely to have a significant impact on the environment.
