The Department of Health and Social Services has spent £4,180 on media training for staff since 2004. The International Relations Division spent £3,370 in 2005 on media training for staff representing Wales at overseas events where they are sometimes required to give media interviews.

Questions to the Minister for Heritage

Nick Bourne (Mid and West Wales): Will the Minister outline how the Visit Wales money from his marketing and advertising budgets was spent in the last Assembly financial year? (WAQ52889)

Nick Bourne (Mid and West Wales): Will the Minister make a statement on the use of the advertising and marketing budgets for Visit Wales? (WAQ52891)

Substantive answer following holding reply.

The Minister for Heritage (Alun Ffred Jones): The Visit Wales marketing budget is spent on integrated campaigns focusing on markets which are deemed to offer Wale the greatest potential. The actual techniques and media used will vary across campaigns and markets depending on the specific communications challenge and business objective. This will usually include a mix of advertising, direct response, e-marketing, media relations and travel trade.

In selecting which individual publications to advertise in, Visit Wales’s overriding consideration is to identify the most appropriate media to deliver the identified campaign objective.

Nick Bourne (Mid and West Wales): Will the Minister list any Welsh magazines in which advertisements are placed by Visit Wales, giving the impact that these have had on visitors in Wales? (WAQ52890)

Substantive answer following holding reply.

Alun Ffred Jones: I am not aware of any consumer advertising from Visit Wales within Welsh based magazines. This is because Visit Wales’ focus is on markets external to Wales. Whilst the Welsh market clearly offers potential for Welsh tourism businesses, Visit Wales’s priority is to bring visitors from outside Wales to holiday here. This policy is kept under review in discussions with the industry through the Wales Tourism Alliance.

Nick Bourne (Mid and West Wales): Will the Minister make a statement on the support given Visit wales to Welsh businesses in relation to advertising and marketing in Wales? (WAQ52892)

Substantive answer following holding reply.

Alun Ffred Jones: Visit Wales does not give advertising support directly to individual tourism businesses whether this be for advertising within Wales or outside of Wales. Its primary role is to promote Wales as a visitor destination and within that to highlight the assets that will attract potential visitors. Its role is not to financially support the marketing of individual Welsh businesses.

Visit Wales does produce a number of marketing brochures which businesses can advertise in at a cost.

Nick Bourne (Mid and West Wales): Will the Minister make a statement on what discussions he has had with Powys County Council regarding the future of Tourism Information Centres in Powys and give details? (WAQ52903)

Substantive answer following holding reply.

Alun Ffred Jones: I have had no discussions with Powys County Council regarding the future of Tourism Information Centres (TICs) in Powys.

As I have explained to you in past correspondence, although Visit Wales provides support to the network of TICs in Wales, responsibility for the provision and management of TICs lies in the main with the local authorities.

Jonathan Morgan (Cardiff North): Can the Minister provide a cost breakdown of the Welsh Assembly Government’s staging of the Belgian Premiere of 'The Edge of Love’ on the 25th November 2008? (WAQ52940)

Substantive answer following holding reply.

Alun Ffred Jones: The Welsh Assembly Government supported a screening of 'The Edge of Love’ in Brussels on 25 November for an invited audience of 246 guests, comprising EU contracts and the Belgian travel trade. The screening was preceded by short presentations from the Welsh Assembly Government EU Office and the South ales Tourism Partnership to promote Wales as a tourist destination. The cost breakdown is:
