Independent Advisers to the Senedd Commission

Duration: 3 years fixed-term
Remuneration: £5000 per annum, with an additional £2,000 available for advisory committee chairing responsibilities

The Senedd Commission is seeking to appoint up to five Independent Advisers to provide independent insight, constructive challenge and assurance to support the governance and strategic direction of the Commission.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to public life in Wales by bringing your expertise, experience and independent judgement to support the Commission in delivering effective, transparent and trusted services for Members of the Senedd and the people of Wales.

About the role

As an Independent Adviser, you will be required to act in a non-political, advisory capacity to the Senedd Commission, predominantly through its executive team. The Advisers are expected to develop constructive relationships and offer supportive challenge across the Commission’s business with a view to ensuring that all aspects of strategy and delivery are scrutinised for effectiveness and efficiency. They contribute to the corporate governance, monitoring of the performance and progress of the organisation, including the use of human and financial resources, and maintain a critical overview of the organisation’s financial controls and procedures.

This is a non-executive appointment, requiring approximately 15 days per year commitment. The role is remunerated at £5,000 per annum, with an additional £2,000 available for advisory committee chairing responsibilities.

We are seeking individuals who can bring a broad range of knowledge, skills, expertise, perspectives and lived experience, who will provide independent insight and constructive challenge, helping to support the highest standards across the organisation.

Within the cohort of advisers we wish to appoint this year and next, two roles with particular expertise have been identified:

Finance / Audit Adviser

Candidates should hold a recognised professional qualification in finance, accountancy or audit and have substantial senior-level experience in these fields. Experience of scrutinising financial performance, assurance arrangements and organisational risk within a complex organisation is desirable.

Dignity and Respect Adviser

We are also seeking candidates with significant expertise in organisational culture, dignity and respect, inclusion, conduct frameworks, or the prevention of bullying and harassment, who can provide thoughtful and constructive challenge in these areas.

We aim to achieve diversity among our Independent Advisers by drawing on a broad range of backgrounds, perspectives and experience.

We are also particularly keen to hear from you if you have skills, expertise or experience in one or more of the following areas:

• experience of providing independent, balanced and constructive challenge at a senior level;
• senior leadership or advisory experience within a complex organisation;
• sound judgement, credibility and influence;
• the ability to understand complex organisational, political and constitutional environments;
• a commitment to public service values, integrity, equality, diversity and inclusion; and
• the ability to contribute strategically to organisational governance and performance.

We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

• finance, accountancy or audit;
• risk management and assurance;
• organisational culture, dignity and respect;
• equality, diversity and inclusion;
• dignity and respect;
• organisational transformation and change;
• digital and ICT transformation;
• communications and engagement; and
• senior executive leadership.
