Assembly improves Stonewall rank of gay-friendly places to work

The National Assembly for Wales has been ranked 47th in the top 100 gay-friendly places to work in the UK.

The Workplace Equality Index, produced by equal rights organisation Stonewall, examines corporate strategies, staff LGB networks, staff engagement and development, and positive feedback.

Last year the National Assembly for Wales was placed 73rd and also won the ‘Most improved employer in Wales’ award.

Commissioner for the Sustainable Assembly Lorraine Barrett AM said: “I am very pleased with our 47th place in Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index.

“It shows our continuing commitment to providing a workplace where all staff feel valued and supported.

“As ever, this ranking will only encourage us to do even more in future to make sure equality and inclusion is at the heart of the way we work and evolve.

“I would hope our efforts encourage other companies and organisations in Wales to follow our example.”

Director of Stonewall Cymru Liz Morgan said: “Congratulations tothe National Assembly for Walesand all the other employers in Wales who secured a place on Stonewall’s 2010 Top 100 list as competition was fiercer than ever.

“We received more entries than any previous year from Welsh employers who understand and have benefited from Stonewall’s research which found that gay people are far more likely to buy goods or services from companies they know are gay-friendly.

“The Index is a powerful tool used by Britain's 1.7 million gay employees and 150,000 gay university students to decide where to take their talent and skills.”
