S4C plans to broadcast work of National Assembly welcomed as a boost for Welsh democracy

20 April 2010

Broadcaster S4C has announced that it will begin showing the proceedings of the National Assembly for Wales from Tuesday April 20.

The decision has been welcomed by Presiding Officer Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas AM who says its good news for the democratic process in Wales.

“This is a great boost for democracy in Wales,” said Lord Elis-Thomas.

“Next month we’ll see the 10th Assembly Measure receive Royal Approval since the Assembly was given the power to make primary legislation after the last Assembly Elections. We have also drawn down more powers through 14 Legislative Competence Orders.

“So it is more important than ever that voters are able to view the work of their elected members in order to make an informed decision at the ballot box.

“I would like to thank our partners S4C for playing a major role in helping us meet this objective of increasing participation in the democratic process.

“It will also complement our own web-based channel Senedd TV which streams all Assembly proceedings live as well as BBC Democracy Live.”
