Assembly Members have voted in favour of the general principles of the Senedd and Elections Bill. The move paves the way for the Bill to proceed to the next stage of the legislative process.
The Bill proposes to lower the voting age for Assembly elections, change the name of the Assembly as well as making important changes to the electoral rules.
The Llywydd, as the member in charge of the Bill on behalf of the Assembly Commission, said;
“I am grateful to the Constitutional and Legislative Affairs Committee and the Finance Committee for discussing the Bill thoroughly, and to all those involved in developing this Bill and its scrutiny. The general aim of this Bill is to create a more effective and accessible Parliament, ensuring that our democracy framework is fit for purpose.
This Bill is a significant step in that direction, and I welcome the fact that the Assembly has agreed its general principles.”
Stage 2 of the Bill will commence in the Autumn.
