Discovering the Heart of Wales at the Senedd

I had the privilege of completing a work experience placement with the Citizen Engagement Team at the Welsh Parliament, Senedd Cymru. This experience gave me an in-depth look at how the Senedd functions as "the people's parliament," providing everyone in Wales with a platform to participate in democracy. I discovered how the Senedd is a welcoming and inclusive space where everyone can feel that their contributions matter.

Witnessing Democracy in Action: The Climate Change, Environment, and Infrastructure Committee

One of the most memorable moments during my work experience was attending a session of the Climate Change, Environment, and Infrastructure Committee, chaired by Llyr Gruffydd MS. The Committee scrutinises crucial environmental policies and legislation, which shape the future of our country. Watching the session from the public gallery, I witnessed first-hand how accessible the Senedd is to the public, allowing everyone to engage with the work of their elected representatives.

Presenting My Pollution Monitor to Senedd Members

I also had the opportunity to present my Pollution Monitor to Llyr Gruffydd MS and Carolyn Thomas MS. The device assesses air quality in schools and residential areas, using emojis to communicate pollution levels. Both Members showed keen interest, asking insightful questions about its potential impact on public health and raising air quality awareness.

Talking Geography with Senedd Researchers

In addition to these experiences, I spoke with Senedd researchers. Their expertise in areas such as biodiversity, housing, and environmental issues ensures that Members of the Senedd are well-informed and able to make evidence-based decisions, drawing from the most up-to-date and impartial information. This behind-the-scenes work is crucial to the effective functioning of the parliament and highlights the importance of thorough research in shaping Wales' future.

Engaging Welsh organisations: Y Farchnad (The Marketplace)

As part of my placement, I also explored some of the opportunities provided by the Senedd Engagement's Service. I attended Y Farchnad (The Marketplace), an initiative that brings together various organisations from across Wales. This vibrant space allows the public to interact directly with Members of the Senedd and contribute to policy discussions.

Meeting individuals involved in diverse projects, such as seagrass conservation and agricultural issues, was inspiring and showcased how the Senedd actively engages with the concerns of its citizens. I also met with individuals from the Education Service and the Welsh Youth Parliament.

Inspiring the Next Generation: Education Service and Welsh Youth Parliament

The Education Service plays a crucial role in ensuring that young people across Wales can engage with the Senedd, offering a range of educational programs and resources. Schools and youth groups are invited to visit the Senedd to learn about its role in Welsh democracy, participate in workshops, and even take part in debates within a mock Senedd chamber. These visits are designed to inspire young people to become active citizens and understand the importance of their voices in shaping the future of Wales.

The Welsh Youth Parliament, on the other hand, provides young people aged 11 to 18 with a platform to represent their peers on issues that matter to them. Elected members of the Welsh Youth Parliament have the unique opportunity to influence decision-making at the highest levels, working alongside Senedd Members to bring youth perspectives to the forefront. This initiative empowers young people from all over Wales to actively participate in democracy, ensuring that their views and concerns are heard and considered by policymakers.

Committees and Public Engagement: A Bridge to Democracy

Reflecting on my time with the Citizen Engagement Team, I was particularly impressed by elected Members' dedication to involving the public in the democratic process at every level. The team is responsible for supporting committees by facilitating public engagement programmes to ensure people can be heard, including seldom-heard communities and those who may feel disconnected from politics.

They ensure that everyone, regardless of background or location, has the opportunity to contribute to policy discussions on issues that affect them, from healthcare and education to climate change and social justice. Committees' public engagement bridges the gap between the Senedd and the people of Wales, making the parliament more accessible and responsive to the needs and voices of its citizens.

Reflecting on My Enriching Senedd Experience

My work experience at the Welsh Parliament was deeply enriching. It highlighted the importance of public engagement in democracy and demonstrated that the Senedd is truly a place where every voice matters. My experience also highlighted that while the Senedd’s work often makes headlines, it is the consistent, everyday efforts that drive meaningful change. I am grateful for the opportunity to witness this commitment to inclusivity and participation firsthand.
