The next Senedd election is on 7 May 2026. The Members you elect will have the power to make decisions about things that affect everyone in Wales.
But what exactly can the Senedd (the Welsh Parliament) make decisions about?
Some of the issues the Senedd – and Members of the Senedd (MSs) – are responsible for include:
- Agriculture
- Culture
- Education
- The environment
- Health and healthcare services
- Some taxes
- Transport
- Welsh Language
The Senedd is responsible for laws and decisions on many of the issues that affect everyday life in Wales, but some matters like defence or immigration are decided by the UK Parliament in Westminster.
Although the power to make laws about these and other issues remains with the UK Parliament, the Senedd still discusses how they impact Wales, and MSs can raise concerns on your behalf.
Why does it matter?
It’s important to know the difference between Senedd and Westminster powers because understanding who has power over specific issues can help you hold politicians to account.
The politicians who represent you and your community in the Senedd are known as Members of the Senedd (MSs), and are different to the politicians who represent you in Westminster, who are known as Members of Parliament (MPs).
For example, you might want to raise a concern about your local hospital. If you know that healthcare in Wales is the Senedd’s responsibility, you can contact any of your MSs about the issue, or visit their office in your constituency.
Or you might want to raise a concern about policing in your area. Policing is legislated by the UK Parliament, so your MP has responsibility for changing the law. However, your MSs can still raise concerns, scrutinise how policing affects communities in Wales, and represent your views.
In short, knowing where decisions are made and who has a say in making them can help you decide how to get involved.

How do I contact my Members of the Senedd?
You can contact any of your MSs – in person, online, or by phone – no matter who you voted for. All represent you equally.
Your Members are your representatives in the Welsh Parliament, and can ask the Welsh Government questions on your behalf.
