The River Teifi is one of Wales’s most iconic waterways, flowing entirely within Wales. Celebrated for its wildlife, cultural heritage and history, it also faces growing pressures from pollution, climate change and unsustainable land use.
Llais yr Afon brought together artists, scientists and conservationists from Save the Teifi, West Wales Rivers Trust, Small World Theatre and spacetocreate. Inspired by the Idris Mathias map (1945–1962), the project was supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation’s Blue Spaces Programme.
At its heart was The People’s Plan for the River Teifi, a shared vision for the river’s future, shaped by communities and focused on ecological health, sustainable management and involvement. Five themes emerged: Access, Biodiversity, Food & Farming, Water Quality, and Culture & Heritage.
Schools and community engagement, summer events and festivals along the Lower Teifi Valley sparked conversations and creativity, generating material for a contemporary folk map.
