For Gypsies, travelling is not a pastime or leisure activity, but a way of life. In fact, a common belief of the latter part of the nineteenth century suggested that the inclination to travel, called “wanderlust,” was genetic.
The Wanderlust photography project aims to capture the rich and vibrant culture of the Gypsy and Traveller community through the camera lens.
Pupils have had the opportunity to take part in photographic and poetry workshops with local photographer Jon Pountney, photography graduate David Harrhy and poet Patrick Jones. Over the last academic year, they have developed skills and confidence both in front and behind the camera.
The workshops have allowed the pupils to document their daily lives; the traditions, beliefs and experiences of this often-marginalised community. It showcases their resilience, creativity and beauty.
Through a series of portraits, documentary style images and poems, the project sheds light on the diverse and complex narratives of Gypsy Traveller life, challenging stereotypes and promoting understanding and empathy.
The project also provides a platform for the pupils to share their stories, spark conversations and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the travelling community in Torfaen.
