World Meningitis Day

This Assembly:

• Welcomes the 2nd Annual World Meningitis Day on 24th April 2010;

• Notes that there are an estimated 3,500 cases of bacterial meningitis and septicaemia every year in the UK and Republic of Ireland;

• Recognises that there is no vaccine to prevent all strains of the disease;

• Notes that there are approximately 1.2 million cases of bacterial meningitis worldwide and 256,000 deaths due to the disease; and

• Applauds the work of the Meningitis Research Foundation in its aim to create greater awareness about Meningitis and its symptoms.
