Key interests and achievements

Darren is a committed Christian whose interests include reading and history. In the Fourth Assembly, Darren was Chair of the Assembly’s Cross-Party Group on Faith, and the Cross-Party Group on the Armed Forces and Cadets - both of which he was a founder member.

Darren is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), a Fellow of the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM), and a Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA). He is also a member of the governing body of St Brigid’s School in Denbigh.


Personal history

Darren was brought up in Towyn and educated at Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan, Abergele; Llandrillo College, Rhos-on-Sea; and Glyndŵr University. He lives in Kinmel Bay with his wife and two children.


Professional background

Prior to his election to the Assembly, Darren was a manager for an international charity. He has also worked as an accountant; in the construction, care home and telecommunications industries; and served as a member of Conwy County Borough Council, the North Wales Police Authority and the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service.


Political history

Darren was first elected to the National Assembly for Wales in May 2007.

In the Fourth Assembly, Darren served on the opposition front bench as the Shadow Minister for Health and chaired the Assembly's Public Accounts Committee. Darren has also held Shadow Ministerial portfolios on the Environment and Planning, and Communities and Local Government. He is a former member of the National Assembly's Sustainability Committee, and former Chair of the National Assembly's Health, Well-being and Local Government Committee.
