Assembly committee considering new law to relieve housing pressure in Wales – have your say

A National Assembly committee is asking what people think of a proposed new law that would give Welsh Ministers the power to suspend the right-to-buy social housing in Wales.

Legislation Committee No.2 is considering the proposed Measure, which would give Welsh Ministers the power to temporarily suspend the Right-to-Buy and the right-to-acquire held by tenants of social housing providers in Wales in areas of housing pressure.

The Measure would also provide Welsh Ministers with a range of intervention powers that would strengthen the regulation of Registered Social Landlords, matching those powers already available to the regulator in England.

Committee Chair, Val Lloyd AM, said: “Social housing is an issue that affects people all over Wales.

“The Committee is asking interested parties to see whether the Measure will achieve its intended objective of reducing social housing pressure in Wales and whether there are any potential barriers to implementing the provisions that should be considered.”

The questionnaire issued by the Committee can be accessed here.

Alternatively, anyone wishing to submit evidence can write to the Clerk of the Legislation Committee No.2, the National Assembly for Wales, Cardiff Bay, CF99 1NA.

The closing date for this consultation is 5 January 2011.

Further details of the proposed Measure and the accompanying Explanatory Memorandum can be found here.
