Assembly football team to help kick prostate cancer into touch
18 April 2013
The National Assembly for Wales’s football team is supporting the Royal Mail’s Prostate Cancer campaign by playing them in a charity football match on 19 April.
The match is part of the Royal Mail’s fundraising campaign in aid of Prostate Cancer UK, which includes a charity version of the football anthem, Abide with Me, sung by the Royal Mail Choir.
It is available for download from iTunes and Amazon MP3 and Royal Mail will donate £1 for every download.
The fundraising football match at Leckwith Stadium, Cardiff, will kick-off at 15.30 on Friday, with all money raised from the game also going to Prostate Cancer UK.
“Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, with more than 40,000 new cases diagnosed in the UK every year,” said Presiding Officer, Rosemary Butler AM.
“So I am proud that the Assembly’s football team is helping to raise money to fight the disease.
“If you can, please go along to Leckwith Stadium and support this good cause.”
Team manager Kevin Davies added: “The Assembly team is proud to support the campaign to fight Prostate Cancer.
“And we would welcome supporters coming along to the game to support us and the charity.”
Mike Norman of Cardiff Mail Centre, said: “In Wales we decided to arrange our own friendly Cup Final in support of the charity single, Abide with Me, synonymous with Wembley Finals.
“We were delighted when the Welsh Assembly agreed to take part in the match and support this worthwhile cause.
“Every player will help make a real difference to Prostate Cancer UK’s work in supporting men and their families affected by the disease. We encourage our local community to download the song and help us raise as much money for the charity as possible.”
