Committee hears Minister’s commitment to legislate on sunbeds

01 October 2009

The National Assembly for Wales’ Health, Well-being & Local Government Committee heard Health Minister Edwina Hart’s commitment to introduce tighter regulations on sunbeds during an evidence session on Wednesday (30th September).

Members of the committee have been holding an inquiry into the tanning salon industry and in particular, coin-operated machines.

“The committee has yet to make any firm recommendations off the back of the evidence it has received so far as part of the inquiry but the contribution of the Health Minister today certainly gives us food for thought regarding any possible conclusions,” said committee chair Darren Millar AM.

“It’s encouraging to hear the minister take this issue seriously, that’s why we, as a committee, decided to conduct this inquiry in the first place. There is a great deal of public concern regarding sunbeds and tanning salons and we will be taking all of this strong evidence for regulation into account.”

'The evidence presented to the committee so far seems to be pointing us in the direction of regulation in this area.'

The Committee has also heard evidence from the British Medical Association, Consol Suncentre and Consultant Dermatologist Doctor Dafydd Roberts who is an advisor to the Department for Health.
