Committee to take further evidence from education minister on proposed new legislation

The Proposed Additional Learning Needs Legislative Competence Order Committee, which has been established to scrutinise the Welsh Assembly Government’s proposed legislation on additional learning needs, will this week be questioning Education Minister Jane Hutt for the second time.

The proposed Order will provide the Assembly with the power to make its own laws, known as Measures, in the field of education and training for persons with learning difficulties and disabilities.  The Committee has taken evidence from a number of interested parties, including the Disability Rights Commission, the Children’s Commissioner and the chief inspector for education and training in Wales. It will now have a final opportunity to scrutinise the Minister on the Government’s proposals before deliberating on the evidence received and reporting its findings.

Eleanor Burnham AM, Chair of the Committee, said: “The Committee wishes to carry out rigorous scrutiny of the first piece of proposed legislation coming forward from the Government under the Assembly’s new powers. I am very pleased that the Minister is appearing before the Committee again so that Members have the opportunity to question her on issues raised during the course of its work to date.”

The meeting takes place at Committee Room 1, Senedd, Cardiff Bay, at 9.30am on Thursday October 18.
