A delegation of Assembly Members, led by Deputy Presiding Officer David Melding AM, will visit Bosnia next week (13-16 April) as part of a programme of events to mark the 20th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre.

On 11 July 1995, the Bosnian Muslim enclave of Srebrenica fell to Serbian Forces and in the following ten days more than 8,000 Muslims were slaughtered in what has become known as the worst atrocity in Europe since the end of the Second World War.

As part of the commemorations, the Deputy Presiding Officer, along with Assembly Commissioners Sandy Mewies AM, Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM and Peter Black AM, will visit Srebrenica as guests of the UK-based charity, Remembering Srebrenica.

"It is a horrifying truth that the massacre of more than 8,000 people on European soil because of their religious belief occurred as recently as 1995.  Even 20 years on the massacre is still incomprehensible to many of us," the Deputy Presiding Officer said.

"It happened just 50 years after the Holocaust and demonstrates that humanity is still capable of such hatred.

"We will be visiting Srebrenica and laying a wreath at the Srebrenica-Potocari Memorial Centre.

"The Assembly will then host a national event of commemoration later in the year.  We must never forget what happened in Srebrenica, to remember is to try and ensure that this kind of atrocity never happens again."

On 8 July this year, the National Assembly for Wales will host one of the three official commemorations of the massacre in the UK with a reception in the Senedd.
