A group of Welsh football fans were given an official send off on the steps of the Senedd today (May 21) as they embarked on two-week charity drive around Europe.

The fans, from the official Welsh supporters’ charity Gol, will travel through France, Germany, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Georgia before arriving in Azerbaijan ahead of Wales’ World Cup qualifiers on June 6.

As they cross the continent they’ll stop off at orphanages that have been helped by Gol over the years, to see how money is being spent.

The Deputy Presiding,  Rosemary Butler AM, visited Georgia last year as part of an official visit to encourage more women to get involved in politics.

“Georgia is a fantastic country with fantastic people who gave me a great welcome when I visited last year,” said the DPO.

“It’s a country that is also in need of our help which is why I wanted to support Gol in their venture. Not only to help out people in Georgia but youngsters in need across the whole of Europe.

“I wish them all the best on their journey although I’m sure they’ll face a few bumpy roads along the way.”
