Farming unions to give evidence to Finance Committee on foot-and-mouth

Farming unions will today be giving evidence to the Assembly’s Finance Committee as part of its inquiry into the financial impact of foot-and-mouth disease.

The Committee is investigating the cost of the recent outbreak and the effect it will have on the Welsh Assembly Government’s budget.

NFU Cymru, the Farmers’ Union Wales, the Welsh Livestock Auctioneers Association and Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales – will give evidence to Members at a meeting in the Senedd tomorrow, Thursday November 22, at 1.30pm.

Alun Cairns AM, Chair of the Committee, said: “Although a long way from the centre of the outbreak, restrictions on animal movements had a widespread effect on the markets for Welsh livestock and in turn on the farmers who produce them.  I am very pleased that the farming unions and other bodies are coming to Committee to give evidence.”
