More than one hundred year 12 Welsh Baccalaureate students from Ysgol Bryn Elian in Colwyn Bay took part in a Question Time-style event with a panel of politicians.
The event, organised by the school in conjunction with the National Assembly for Wales's Education Outreach Service, highlighted the importance of democratic participation and gave pupils the opportunity to question decision-makers on issues affecting their lives.
This year's panellists were Aled Roberts AM (North Wales), Darren Millar AM (Clwyd West) and Gareth Thomas, prospective Parliamentary candidate for Labour in Clwyd West and Marc Jones prospective Parliamentary candidate for Plaid Cymru in Clwyd West.
The event was Chaired by Year 12 pupils Tiegan Thomas and Callum Elis they ensured that the panel members adhered to the one-minute timescale for answering questions.
The questions from pupils were tabled in advance and included issues such as how to slow down the increase in obesity? What more can be done to help homeless people in Wales and the future of the Education Maintenance Allowance?
Another issue which led to a lively debate was should the voting age be lowered to 16?
Having listened to the opinions of the panellists, Year 13 student Adam Kealey said :
"I support votes at 16. I think that as the voter turnout of 18 to 24 year olds is fairly low if you want to convince more people to vote then why not extend the voting age to 16."
This coincides with the Assembly's six-month Votes@16 conversation with 11 to 25-year-olds in Wales to find out if they would like to see a change in the voting age.
