Mametz Wood, where hundreds of Welsh soldiers lost their lives during the First World War, will be remembered as the Llywydd leads a delegation from the National Assembly for Wales in a commemoration event on Thursday 7 July.

Elin Jones AM will be joined by Plaid Cymru leader Leanne Wood AM, Welsh Conservative leader Andrew RT Davies AM and the leader of UKIP at the Assembly, Neil Hamilton AM, in a memorial on the centenary of the start of the operation by the 38th (Welsh) Division to recapture the 200 acre woodland from German troops during the Battle of the Somme. The First Minister, Carwyn Jones AM will also be participating in the memorial.

“It is an honour to lead this National Assembly delegation in laying a wreath at the Mametz Wood memorial, a symbol of the sacrifice and commitment of Welsh soldiers ,” said Elin Jones AM, Llywyd of the National Assembly for Wales.

“To stand where so many fell in battle will be a stirring reminder of the horrors of war.

“Their sacrifice can never be forgotten nor repeated.”

The National Assembly delegation will lay a wreath at the Mametz Wood memorial, a Welsh dragon situated on a three metre high plinth erected in 1987 by sculptor David Petersen.
