National Assembly welcomes Australian Speaker on his first visit to the Assembly

Mr Harry Jenkins MP, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Parliament of Australia is visiting the National Assembly on Tuesday, July 14th.

Mr Jenkins is the Australian equivalent to the Speaker of the House of Commons, and will be visiting the National Assembly following two other similar visits to Westminster and Scotland.

The Speaker has identified a range of issues for his visits to the three parliaments, including the use of IT in the chamber, security, pass arrangements, management of members’ entitlements, filming and photography guidelines and procedures for public protests and demonstrations.

For his visit to Wales, the Speaker has expressed a particular interest in the use of IT in the chamber. He has also shown an interest in the management of Members’ entitlements, at a time when the National Assembly is changing financial support for Assembly Members and promoting a transparent approach to this issue.

“It gives me great pleasure to welcome Mr Jenkins on his first visit to the National Assembly for Wales,” said Chief Executive and Clerk to the Assembly, Claire Clancy.

“The mace for the Assembly chamber was presented to us by the Parliament of New South Wales so we have close overseas links with New South Wales. These visits help us to maintain those links and to learn from each other.”

“I hope Mr Jenkins finds his visit fulfilling and informative.”
