One month on, the Pierhead close to 10k visitors milestone

Almost ten thousand people have passed through the front doors of the Pierhead in the first month since it reopened.

The landmark building in the heart of Cardiff Bay threw open its doors once again on St David’s Day after months of extensive refurbishment and has already established itself as one of the capital’s top attractions.

The former home of the Cardiff Rail Company now includes, among other features, a permanent exhibition telling the story of the Pierhead and Cardiff docks, an interactive dining table with some of Wales’s most iconic figures and artifacts from Captain Scott’s ship the Terra Nova which set sail for the Antarctic from Cardiff in 1910.

The Pierhead holds a unique role as a combined events and visitor attraction. Events which have already been held there include an exhibition showing the work of Welsh photojournalist Philip Jones Griffiths and the inaugural Pierhead Sessions. Dubbed ‘Hay in the Bay’ the sessions were a series of talks and discussions on various political and cultural issues affecting Wales today.

Visitor and Public Information Services Manager Gwen Thomas said: “We are delighted with the number of visitors to the Pierhead since it reopened.

“When we began planning the refurbishment we wanted it to inform people about its history and the history of Cardiff Bay while, at the same time, be as accessible and as flexible as possible to hold events and exhibitions.

“The venue has already seen some exciting events including the very successful Pierhead Sessions which included a talk from the author and environmentalist George Monbiot.

“We hope the Pierhead has begun to establish a new chapter in its lifetime and we hope even more people come to enjoy it in future.”

The Pierhead is open to visitors six days a week and can be booked for public events. More information is available at the website www.pierhead.org. Alternatively people can email info@pierhead.org or call the booking line on 0845 010 5500.
