Play-off fever has gripped the National Assembly for Wales as two Welsh football sides go head-to-head in the Conference play-off final on Sunday (5 May).

Wrexham and Newport will face each other in the Wembley showdown which will see the winner promoted to the Football League.

Chief cheerleader for Newport County AFC is the Assembly’s Presiding Officer and Newport West Assembly Member, Rosemary Butler AM.

“Having represented Newport West at the Assembly since 1999, I am obviously rooting for my team,” the Presiding Officer said.

“But I wish both sets of players and supporters all the best ahead of the game, and whichever team wins, I hope they go on to taste success in the Football League next season.

“It is also another key milestone in a year that is fast becoming one of the greatest in the history of Welsh football.

“Wrexham has already tasted success this season winning the FA Trophy, while Cardiff City has clinched promotion to the Premiership, and Swansea won the League Cup at Wembley.

“Hopefully this great season of football will see further success for one of our teams, but perhaps more importantly it will leave a legacy that grassroots football in Wales can build on.”
