Presiding Officer to address Cardiff Mardi Gras

30 August 2012

The National Assembly for Wales’s Presiding Officer, Rosemary Butler AM, will celebrate with Wales’s gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans community at the annual Cardiff Wales Mardi Grass on Saturday (1 September).

Mrs Butler will speak from the festival’s main stage as well as visiting various organisations around the site, and spending time on the Assembly’s own outreach bus.

“The National Assembly for Wales is committed to equality in everything we do from rights for staff members, services to our customers and in the laws that we pass,” the Presiding Officer said ahead of the Mardi Gras.

“This year the Assembly was ranked 20th in Stonewall’s list of top 100 gay-friendly places to work in the UK, up 22 places from last year’s position.

“That’s why I want to be at Mardi Gras to show the Assembly’s continued support of Wales’s LGBT community and reaffirm our commitment to equality issues.

“It’s also one of the most enjoyable and colourful days out in the capital, so I would encourage everyone to pop long and join in a fantastic day of celebration.”

This year’s events will commence with Wales’ first ever Mardi Gras Parade.

The parade will take place on the morning of the 1 September - and will move off from the assembly point on Dumballs Road through St Mary Street and High Street prior to arriving at Coopers Field for the main event at 12.30pm.
