Presiding Officer to welcome Welsh Olympic Heroes to Senedd

Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas, the Presiding Officer of the National Assembly for Wales will welcome three of Wales’s Olympic heroes to the Senedd on Tuesday August 26th at midday along with First Minister Rhodri Morgan and Heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones.

Gold medallists Nicole Cooke and Geraint Thomas and silver medallist David Davies will arrive in an open top bus following a tour of Cardiff Bay. There will be a short ceremony on the steps of the Senedd before the athletes and their friends and families attend a reception inside.

Members of the public are invited to watch the ceremony and welcome their heroes home. Only Men Aloud!, the Cardiff choir who have reached the final of the BBC’s Last Choir Standing competition will entertain the crowds as they await the athletes’ arrival.

Lord Elis-Thomas said: “I, like the rest of Wales, am very proud of the achievements of our Olympic athletes at the Beijing Games and am honoured to be welcoming them to the Senedd to recognise their achievements. I hope that the Welsh people will come along to welcome them home and celebrate their success with us”
