Presiding Officer wishes Welsh Paralympians good luck as their quest for gold begins

28 August 2012

The London 2012 Paralympics begin on 29 August with a record 38 athletes from Wales due to battle it out for gold.

They will be taking part in a range of sports from swimming to sailing, track & field to archery, and volleyball to cycling.

Welsh athletes have a strong pedigree in the Paralympics, with around 25 per cent of the gold medals won by Team GB at the Beijing Games, won by Welsh competitors.

“There is no doubt that the performances by our Welsh athletes at the recent London 2012 Olympics were inspirational,” said Rosemary Butler AM.

“But the way our Paralympians confront their disabilities and perform to such a high standard takes inspiration to a new level.

“Wales had a very successful games last time round in Beijing and I’m sure with more athletes taking part than ever before, we can better our medal haul in London.

“I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of all Assembly Members and staff, to wish our Welsh competitors good luck in their quest for gold.”
