A hundred sixth-form students from across Wales will gain first-hand experience of life in the National Assembly for Wales at the annual Government and Politics conference, which takes place on 11 and 12 February.

The two-day event features a series of presentations and workshops designed to educate students on the work of the Assembly and provide an opportunity for them to air their views on issues that are important to them.

The event will be hosted by the Presiding Officer of the National Assembly, Dame Rosemary Butler AM, who has put young people at the heart of the Assembly's drive to increase engagement with the work of the National Assembly.

Among the speakers this year are the First Minister for Wales Carwyn Jones AM who will be answering questions from the students, Professor Richard Wyn Jones who will be looking at What next after the Scottish Referendum, Desmond Clifford Principal Private Secretary to the First Minister of Wales who will be looking at the role of the Civil Service; Lleu Williams from Cardiff University Wales Governance centre, Mathew Francis, Public Affairs Assistant, Cardiff University and Chris Warner, Head of Policy and Legislation Committee Service at the National Assembly for Wales.

Students will take part in workshops to debate the changing constitution of the UK and work with the main four political parties to write manifestos. One of the highlights will be a Question Time session with representatives from all four parties represented in the Assembly.

Students will also be able to contribute to the consultation on Vote@16, which looks at lowering the voting age to 16, as well as contributing directly to the work of the Assembly by giving their views on supply teachers in a national Assembly questionnaire.

The aim of the Conference is to cover aspects of the WJEC's Advanced Level 'Government and Politics' specification providing students with an excellent insight to the workings of the Assembly, the Welsh Government and the political parties.

Presiding Officer of the National Assembly, Dame Rosemary Butler AM said:

"We look forward to welcoming all the delegates to this year's Government and Politics conference.

"It's important that the Senedd engages with young people throughout Wales and events such as this enables us to hear their views as well as giving them a better understanding of how the work of the Senedd can have a positive impact on their lives."
