The National Assembly for Wales’s video streaming channel, Senedd TV, is re-launching today (15 September) offering an improved service.

Users will now be able to embed clips from Plenary and committee meetings and view the service on mobile devices, in addition to accessing existing functions.

Key features of the improved Senedd TV include:

  • ability to clip a specific section of Assembly business and embed on a third-party site;
  • the ability to view on mobile devices;
  • an improved search facility making it easier to locate archived material;
  • a scrub feature which allows the user to rewind live video and go straight to the point of an archived video with ease;
  • adaptive streaming to improve the picture quality;
  • archiving video within two seconds providing near real-time accessibility to historical content.

"I made a commitment, through my ‘Addressing the Democratic Deficit in Wales’ campaign to improve access to the Assembly’s data and content," said Presiding Officer, Dame Rosemary Butler AM.

"I believe Senedd TV is now a resource that will widen access to and engagement with the work of the National Assembly.

"It will allow individuals and organisations to directly embed Assembly content onto their own platforms. For example, if a charity wanted to tell their clients about something the First Minister said in a Plenary meeting, they can now put the relevant clip onto their own website.

"The improved functionality will also make it easier to search our extensive archive, and - perhaps most importantly - you will now be able to view Senedd TV on your mobile device, reflecting current media consumption trends.

"I believe it is an exciting development that will allow the National Assembly for Wales to promote the very important work that it does, in terms of scrutinising the Welsh Government and new laws, to a wider audience."

Peter Black AM, the Assembly Commissioner with responsibility for ICT and edemocracy, said: "The National Assembly must reach out to as wide an audience as possible to ensure that democracy works in Wales.

"With many of us now choosing to engage and communicate through digital media channels it is imperative that the Assembly utilises these platforms.

"Providing an on-line video streaming tool that provides functionality for people to engage with the Assembly is a central part of that process, and the launch of the refreshed Senedd TV will allow for greater interaction with the Assembly’s content to take place."
