Renowned Welsh conductor Owain Arwel Hughes will be giving his views on music in education to the National Assembly’s Culture, Welsh Language and Communications Committee on Thursday 12 January at the Senedd in Cardiff.

Mr Hughes founded the Welsh Proms and has conducted for Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra in Denmark.

He was also Artistic Director of Camerata Wales, a freelance orchestra, and worked with the National Youth Orchestra of Wales.

The Committee began its inquiry into music in education following a public poll and will be gathering evidence throughout the spring term before publishing its findings.

Chair of the Committee, Bethan Jenkins AM, said:

“We are very much looking forward to hearing what Owain Arwel Hughes has to say.

“He represents Wales at the very pinnacle of the music industry, but has also invested his time in supporting the next generation of artists and musicians, including the National Youth Orchestra of Wales.”

The meeting will take place at 10.30 in Committee Room 2 at the Senedd. Anyone wanting to watch can either do so online through Senedd TV, or book a seat in the public gallery through the National Assembly booking line, 0300 200 6565.
