The Senedd Election is happening on 6 May. If you’re 16 or over, you can vote at the Senedd Election.
By registering to vote, you’re guaranteeing that you’re able to use your voice on election day to shape the future of Wales.
Here’s five things you need to know about registering to vote.
- To be able to vote in an election in Wales, you need to be registered to vote. The deadline to register to vote is midnight on Monday 19 April.
- Registering to vote is quick and easy. You can register online or by post. You’ll be asked about: where you live, nationality, date of birth, your full name, your address, your National Insurance number (but you can still register if you don’t have one).
If you can’t provide a National Insurance number you’ll need to explain why. This could delay your name getting on the electoral register. If you can’t find your National Insurance number, you can use the HMRC enquiry service. It’s worth noting that HMRC will not tell you your National Insurance number over the phone, it will be posted and arrive within 15 working days. - If Wales is your home, wherever you’re from, your voice matters. You can register to vote if you’re a British, Irish or qualifying Commonwealth citizen, a citizen of the European Union, or a qualifying foreign citizen. Find out which elections you can vote in.
- Not sure if you’ve registered to vote previously? Check with your local Electoral Registration Office. Find your local office.
- Need to change your name or address? You can update your details using the ‘Register to vote’ service. You’ll need to register to vote with your new details, even if you’re already registered to vote.
