Huw Irranca-Davies MS is the new Llywydd (Presiding Officer) of the Welsh Parliament.
He was chosen by fellow Members at the Senedd’s first Plenary meeting following the 2026 election, and now takes on one of the most important roles in public life in Wales.
“This Senedd has reputation for respectful debate and engagement, and I’m very much hopeful we can keep that going forward.”
Huw Irranca-Davies MS talks about being elected Llywydd and his approach to the role.
What does the Llywydd do?
The role of the Llywydd is similar to the roles of Speakers and Presiding Officers in parliaments across the world. Though the exact responsibilities of the job vary from country to country, and they may have different titles, the roles are broadly alike.
The Llywydd is responsible for making sure the Senedd runs fairly and effectively. They chair Plenary meetings, manage debates and make sure all Members are treated equally.
Five key elements of the role are:
- chairing Plenary meetings in the Siambr, the Senedd’s debating chamber, remaining politically impartial at all times
- keeping order during debates
- applying the Senedd’s rules (Standing Orders) when needed
- representing the Senedd in Wales, the UK and internationally
- chairing the Senedd Commission, which oversees the organisation’s staff and services
How is the Llywydd chosen?
The Llywydd is elected by Members of the Senedd.
At the first meeting after an election, Members nominate candidates for the role. If more than one person is nominated, a secret ballot is held. This process helps ensure the Llywydd has the support of Members from across the Senedd.
