An exhibition by Lewis Prosser
Dates: 1 August - 29 October 2026
Location: Senedd Neuadd
Lewis Prosser is an absurdist basketmaker, artist, and curator based in Wales. He uses heritage basketry techniques and performance to explore themes of regional identity, cultural exchange, and public ceremony.
In Civic Ceremonial, Prosser reimagines traditional civic regalia – items used in official ceremonies to mark local and national milestones. The pieces merge traditional craft techniques, such as basketry and heritage metalworking, to create new ceremonial objects.
“Often borrowing from mythic or religious symbolism, these civic tools represent a human-scale form of power rooted in democratic community consensus rather than top-down authority. The power they grant is often modest: spreading good news, celebrating local achievements and centenary birthdays, or marking national commemorations. Yet even within the local sphere, small power can sometimes spark significant change.” – Lewis Prosser

Like many parliaments, the Senedd has a ceremonial mace. Originally symbolising the monarch’s authority, a ceremonial mace is carried into a parliament as part of its official opening ceremony.
In October 2026, the Seventh Senedd will be officially opened. During the ceremony in the Siambr (debating chamber), the mace will be placed in its sconce to mark the formal start of proceedings.
As we approach this moment, Prosser’s work invites us to reflect on our shared role in civic life. It suggests that decision-making is not confined to institutions, but created collectively.
