Design at its Heart

The Senedd building was opened by Queen Elizabeth II on St David’s Day in 2006. Designed by architectural firm Rogers, Stirk, Harbour and Partners (RSHP), the building makes extensive use of Welsh materials like slate and oak.

In this display we share some of Ivan Harbour’s early sketches for the Senedd and talk about the values that underpin the building, such as environmental sustainability, transparency, and openness.

Join us in the Pierhead to find out more.

‘In a parliament, business frequently happens “behind closed doors”. In the design of the Senedd, as a modern democracy, we removed those doors to make the work of the Senedd visible.’

Architect and RSHP Partner leading the Senedd project

Monday – Friday: 09.00 - 16.30

Saturdays and bank holidays: 10.30 - 16.30

Please note:

The Senedd building is open before and after usual opening times to accommodate visitors viewing Plenary, committees and other Senedd business.

We are looking forward to opening the Siambr Viewing Gallery when the work to expand the Siambr is complete. During this time, while it is closed, Members will instead meet for Plenary in Siambr Hywel. This means that the capacity for viewing Plenary will be lower, and the route of tours will be different to normal.

Admission is free
