Location: Pierhead Futures Gallery
‘Through Our Eyes’ is a photography exhibition celebrating 160 years of Sight Life, formerly Cardiff Institute for the Blind. All the photographs on show have been taken by people whose vision is limited in one way or another.
Sight Life’s photography group includes experienced photographers and ambitious amateurs. They all share a love of photography and some form of sight loss.
Their work proves that, whether it’s cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration or another eye disease, sight loss is no bar to pursuing a passion for pictures. Their ability to capture architecture, portraits, street scenes, wildlife and stunning indoor images using everyday items shows that nothing is beyond their grasp.
And that reflects the wider ethos of this 160-year-old charity. Sight Life steps in when medicine can do no more. Through a mix of practical help, peer group support, clubs and activities, the charity enables people (including family and friends) to see that a diagnosis of sight loss is not the end of the world.
And, as well as challenging the idea that photographers need 20/20 vision, these images help promote Sight Life’s work and show that there is life after sight loss.
