Questions to the Minister for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills

Jenny Randerson (Cardiff Central): Will the Minister make a statement on the proposed publication date for the Welsh Assembly Government guidance 'Access to education and support for pupils with medical needs’, and on the proposed arrangements for ensuring its implementation? (WAQ54537)

The Minister for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills (Jane Hutt): The guidance 'Access to Education and Support for Pupils with Medical Needs’ will provide advice to schools and local authorities on meeting the educational requirements of pupils with medical needs. The guidance is being developed in collaboration with key stakeholders from across Wales and will emphasise the need for continuity in education and the impact that medical conditions can have on a pupil’s education, health and social well-being. The guidance will also closely align to standards contained in the National Service Framework for Children, Young People and Maternity Services.

The guidance will be published during the Autumn Term 2009 and my officials are in discussion with Asthma UK and Diabetes Cymru on the most appropriate way to ensure maximum impact and implementation across all sectors.

The Counsel General and Leader of the House (Carwyn Jones): In my specific role as Counsel General I have given this no consideration.
