Assembly receives largest ever petition since committee was established

2/12/2009

The National Assembly for Wales has today (1 Dec) received its largest ever petition since the Petitions Committee was established.

More than 16 thousand people have signed the document opposing the North East Wales/West Cheshire Sub-Regional Strategy which promotes closer cross-border co-operation to promote development.

But petitioners describe it as an ill thought out, damaging and subversive plan.

A delegation of fifteen people from the People’s Council for North Wales will today hand the petition to Chair of the Petitions Committee Val Lloyd AM on the steps of the Senedd in Cardiff Bay.

“This is a great example of democracy in action. The people who have signed this petition clearly feel passionately that there is a case to answer against the Strategy,” said Mrs Lloyd.

“It is campaigns like these which demonstrate how the public can access the National Assembly for Wales and get their voices heard. I am proud to say we are one of the few political bodies in the world which has a committee dedicated to examining petitions.”

“Myself and my committee colleagues will be listening to their concerns and will be looking into this issue in more detail.”
